LA BOCA DEL PUEBLO

La Boca del Pueblo is a Mexican-American documentary film project that began in 2021 with a series of photographic images of the people of Oaxaca, México with and without their facemasks. The diversity of their responses both to masks and to the pandemic overall led to the idea of creating a documentary film highlighting Oaxaca’s historically unique cultural responses to a global pandemic.

Production will begin in 2023 with the help of a creative community comprised of artists, photographers, filmmakers, writers, musicians and volunteers from every corner of Oaxaca.

A preliminary website is online at https://LaBocaDelPueblo.mx

COVER IMAGE: The cover image above is a photo of a since removed street mural in el Centro de Oaxaca of Mexico’s most famous and revered shaman, María Sabina. Seeing a mask on this legendary folk heroine is nearly sacrilegious. Artist’s credits appear on the website.
